You probably know by now our 40-Year Class Reunion was cancelled due to the Grizzly Gulch Fire, which started at about 2 p.m. on June 29th, behind the Mile High Trailer Court south of Deadwood and Lead on Highway 385. It burned 10,771 acres before being contained July 7th. At its peak, 904 firefighting personnel were on hand including several federal "Hot Shot" crews. The fire forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists from the area. The governor first ordered Deadwood evacuated on June 29th, and then parts of Lead on June 30th. Residents of the southern parts of Boulder Canyon were evacuated later in the week as well as the Strawberry Hill area and Galena. On July 12th, the fire was declared fully controlled. (They figure it would be several weeks before it was entirely out.)
The temperature the day the fire started was well over 100 degrees and the relative humidity was only 11 percent. The heat caused expansion and sagging of power lines to touch trees and foliage then going to ground causing sparks behind the Lead trailer court, igniting the fire. With only 11 percent humidity, combustion from the sparks was magnified. If the humidity had been higher it might have been a different story and allowed the sparks to snuffed themselves out without incident to catch fire and we would have had a great Reunion.
On July 2nd, Char (Lakson) Betts tried to call the 35 classmates that had contacted her and were planning on coming. Several of the classmates had already left by that Tuesday.
On July 5th after the residents of Lead were able to return to their homes on July 4th Mary (Schindler) Coffin suggested that we have a cancellation party and what a great idea. We meet Friday night the 5th, at 7pm on the terrace at the Golden Hills Inn to catch those that still showed up. We had 25 classmates and their spouses, relatives or friends for a total of almost 50 people... not too shabby for a last minute thing... Thanks Mary. The following couple of days Mike and Debby Truitt had several people out to their cabin. Char and John Betts had the pleasure of Bob Asheim and his son Robby over the weekend, and then Bob Lickingteller stopped in on Monday evening and Tuesday.
It seemed like everyone had a good time except that the Hamburgers where not the best (not much food was left) as the Golden Hills Inn was providing lodging and food for several different Fire Departments from around South Dakota, and they did not get the delivery trucks into Lead during the evacuation.
For any of the classmates that have already paid, Char will return your money if you like or hold onto it and collect a little interest for a 41-Year reunion. She is waiting for new information from several different locations and has tentative reservations at Spearfish Canyon Lodge for June 27th thru the 29th with check-out on Monday the 30th of next year, as the weekend of July 4th is already booked up at most of the places in the area. Hope to see you all in June and if you can't make it please keep in touch with us.
